Avebury House: steeped in history, brings community alive

In the heart of Richmond is Avebury House, a charming heritage building that has been a central pillar in the community for generations. With its doors open to the public, Avebury House is a bustling hub of community events and workshops, and acts as a beautiful venue for both public and private celebrations alike. The property lies in the vicinity of the Richmond Community Garden.

Many regular events run in or around the house throughout the week, including exercise classes, various crafting and writing groups, and wellbeing workshops. Other activities include one-day school, The Children’s Imagination Academy; a no-fees horticultural school for those looking to gain employment; and various counsellor and mediation services. Adjacent to the main house, Avebury Workshop is a space for those wanting help to work on DIY projects.

The enchanting garden-like environment continues to serve as a versatile and affordable venue space for memorable public and private events, including weddings, birthday parties, memorial dinners, and community events.

Another beautiful aspect of Avebury House is its kitchen, which serves as a workshop space for the Richmond Community Garden and hosts groups such as Recreate, which empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities. In addition, the kitchen has incubated start-up culinary businesses, giving aspiring entrepreneurs a platform to flourish.

Throughout the year, Avebury House celebrates and runs events and festivals that bring the community together, including seasonal fairs, Matariki celebrations, a family-oriented Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Anzac commemorations, and a Christmas market. The Vintage Market is on the lawn several times a year with an eclectic mix of stalls, adding to the nostalgic charm of this historic site.

With its social media presence, website, and digital newsletter, Avebury House ensures that its services and events reach a wider audience. Additionally, a physical newsletter with a distribution of 2,000 copies keeps local residents informed and engaged.
