Christchurch Envirohub is a proud member of Environment Hubs Aotearoa, a charitable incorporated society led by 18 member organisations across Aotearoa New Zealand. Established in 2018, Christchurch Envirohub provides environmental and sustainability organisations in Greater Christchurch a welcoming hub to connect, support, educate and inspire.

An ecosystem of sustainability and environmental organisations in Greater Christchurch with sufficient capacity to pursue their missions.

Mission

Nuturing environmental and community wellbeing in Greater Christchurch while honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Purpose

The purpose of Christchurch Envirohub is to nurture and support sustainability and environmental organisations in Greater Christchurch.

Guiding Values and Principles

Christchurch Envirohub engages with its network, partners and the wider community according to a set of principles and values. Te Tiriti o Waitangi is acknowledged as the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand, and Māori as mana whenua. At Envirohub, we respect te ao Māori, tikanga, kawa, and whanonga pono. We look to develop relationships with iwi and hapū as partners, founded on respect, trust, and reciprocity. Kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga guide the way in which we operate.

At Christchurch Envirohub, we strive for the highest standard of professionalism and integrity. We respect the aspirations and opinions of the sustainability and environmental community and a set of principles guide the way in which we operate and prioritise the activities we undertake.

Board Members

Jocelyn Papprill - Chair Person

Jocelyn is a committed educator for sustainability. Currently, she works part-time as a Youth Engagement and Education Advisor at Environment Canterbury and runs her own educational consultancy, Sustain Ed, from her home in Christchurch. She was a Social Sciences teacher for 25 years and is most proud of creating, with a colleague, a Level 2 NCEA Sustainable Futures course at a Christchurch school.

She is a community activist, involved with numerous environmental groups, and is currently Regional Branch Coordinator with the New Zealand Association for Environmental Education (NZAEE).

Kate Hodgins - Co-Chair

Following a career in international business development based in Hong Kong, Spain and Germany,  Kate moved with her Kiwi husband in 2005 to Christchurch and focused on family development instead. Since then, Kate worked as a business mentor for start ups and in research and market intelligence.

Community work has been a passion throughout, including 6 years as chair of the local primary school board. The opportunity to join Envirohub’s board combines Kate’s interests in community, governance and environmental advocacy.

JulietRobertson

Juliet Robertson - Secretary

Juliet is a passionate sustainability professional who is loving the opportunity to support Christchurch Envirohub in the role of secretary. She recently completed her Masters at UC, which focused on the consumers’ role within supply chains as part of a circular economy.

Juliet now supports businesses through their carbon certification and reduction journey in her position at Toitū Envirocare.

Haojin Tan - Trustee

Haojin has a background in conservation and has spent over a decade promoting and facilitating the use of best practices within the sustainability and conservation sector. A recent migrant from Malaysia, both her and her husband now calls Ōtautahi home.

Haojin believes strongly that many of the issues we face in our society today have interconnected, deep rooted causes, and has been working with teams to resolve wicked issues in a systemic and holistic way.

She is still on a personal journey incorporating and upholding diversity, equity and inclusivity in the work she does, drawing on the rich experience and life lessons from the wonderful people she meets every day, and from her 3 year old toddler, who has taught her so much since entering Haojin and her husband’s life.

Abby Mather - Trustee

Abby is policy advisor in central government with a past life as a project and programme coordinator in local government, crown entities and private organisations. She completed a masters degree in Policy and Governance from the University of Canterbury with her dissertation exploring the potential impact of using citizens’ assemblies to increase public involvement in the creation of climate policies in Aotearoa.

She is a committed environmentalist, advocate for enhanced democratic participation, biking enthusiast and passionate animal rights supporter. In her spare time you will find her baking up a vegan storm, getting stuck into her vege garden or trying her hand at a new craft.

Matt Dodson - Treasurer

Matt has worked in infrastructure, water and resource management for the last 16 years, in local government and consulting. He uses his skill set to help clients understand environmental risks and identify workable solutions.

Matt is at a point in his career where he wants to give back to the community, and has been getting involved in community groups. Christchurch Envirohub purpose aligns with his interest in supporting and participating in grassroots action that focus on the challenges we have as a city.

Tony Rush - Trustee

Tony’s working career – apart from six years teaching – was in marketing, communications and economic development for governmental organisations, Not for Profits and companies such as Hewlett-Packard. He had a parallel career as a territorial infantry officer.

Tony has experience in governance particularly in NFPs, having been national chair of three organisations: EDANZ (economic development), Keep NZ Beautiful and Hearing NZ. He was an elected councillor in Horowhenua for nine years and was qualified to chair Resource Consent hearings.

A father to three children and grandfather to eight, Tony lives alone since his last and best wife of over forty years, Robbie, died mid-2024 but has a daughter, son-in-law and grandson living close by. His abiding passion now is to be of some use to others.

Teresa Wooding - Trustee

Teresa is a passionate climate and environmental leader with extensive experience in sustainability, governance, and advisory roles. Her work focuses on building resilience to climate change and strengthening collaboration across communities and organisations.

She has served on the boards of Shirley Boys’ High School and Roimata Food Commons, where she’s contributed her governance expertise to community-led environmental action. She’s dedicated to fostering partnerships that create lasting positive outcomes for people and the planet and lives those values every day, raising four environmentally conscious children.

Drawing on her background in climate change, resource management, and organisational strategy, Teresa helps Envirohub turn big environmental goals into meaningful action on the ground.

Monica Jasper - Trustee

Monica is an experienced geospatial specialist with a background in hydrology and geoscience, focused on solving spatial challenges and improving processes in the environmental sector. She is passionate about te ao Māori, climate science, and water quality.

Outside of work, Monica enjoys music, exploring new creative outlets, and spending time outdoors, whether in the snow, on the water, among the rocks, or under the trees.

Maisie Fisher - Trustee

Maisie holds a Master’s of Planning from the University of Otago, where her research explored community resilience to natural hazards. She has professional planning experience across both private and public sectors, with a particular interest in how grassroots initiatives can strengthen resilience in rural communities across Aotearoa.

Her work has been published in the Australian Journal of Emergency Management, and she will be presenting her research at the upcoming Adaptation Futures Conference in Christchurch. Maisie is also an active member of the New Zealand Planning Institute’s Canterbury/Westland Emerging Planners committee.

Outside of work, she loves to be outdoors whether that is running/walking/hiking/skiing or all of the above!

Liam Rawson - Trustee

Originally hailing from the West Island of New Zealand (Australia), Liam’s work is as a consultant in the area of Government Incentives, Grants and funding. His career involves delivering tailored support in accessing funding to organisations undertaking innovation and solving interesting problems.

Outside of work, he is typically found literally ‘outside’, with passions for surfing, tramping, swimming, snowboarding, trail running and freediving. He is motivated by sustainability and the custodianship we hold over our beautiful natural home.

Ben Alder - Trust Manager

Ben graduated from the University of Canterbury specialising in Management, Marketing and Business and Sustainability. Whilst studying Ben worked as a Community Project Activator for the Shirley Village Project alongside Steve Jones-Poole. Helping both create and activate the projects occurring within Shirley. Ben loves to fight for the environment as well as get involved with his community, you will often find him exploring the hills, mountains and forests or planting in his own back garden.

Sarah Eichler -
Programmes Coordinator

Sarah moved to Christchurch to expand on her passions for the environment through a degree in social and environmental sustainability at UC. She enjoys working outside in nature, amongst communities and thrives off of hands-on initiatives. Passionate about Te Ao Māori indigenous knowledge, she aspires for a place of equal opportunities for those of all abilities. You’ll often see her either biking across Ōtautahi, kitted up in her football gear or exploring the port hills on one of her long runs. A hard-worker with a love for community, Sarah enjoys an active lifestyle and is always up for a challenge.

Jenny Bond -
Te Tuna Tāone Facilitator

Jenny brings over 20 years of experience working with tamariki, community, industry, and local government to facilitate behaviour change to improve waterway health. Her expertise includes engagement, facilitation, project & event management, working with rūnanga, stormwater and drainage infrastructure, waste management, freshwater ecology, water quality, river engineering, native plantings, communications, marketing, central and local government. She has experience in both rural and urban environments, namely Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. Jenny holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Victoria University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Resource Studies (Environmental Management) from Lincoln University.  What she loves about her mahi is coaching ākonga to realise their action ideas. When not working she is ‘mum’ to two energetic wildings skiing, gardening, baking, boogie boarding and helping them to answer all their ‘why’ questions.
